Orwa Saleh

Orwa Saleh is a Syrian Oud virtuoso and composer whose music reflects his deep connection to his cultural roots and his passion for storytelling. Born and raised in Damascus, Orwa left his home country in 2012 and settled in Austria, where he has built a successful career writing music that reflects his experiences of displacement, adaptation, and cultural exchange.

Orwa’s music is a testament to the power of music to transcend borders and bring people together in a shared experience of beauty and joy. From ancient Syrian tales to contemporary sensations, Orwa embroiders his distinctive, colorful music with riffs, stories, and poems.

With his progressive approach to music, Orwa has redefined the way an Oud is played, incorporating elements of Sufi music and European jazz to create a distinctive and multi-layered identity. His exceptional style of performing and his tunes have made him a unique figure in the music industry.

In Austria, Orwa built his career writing music about the home he left, the home he is building, and the path in between. He has released several albums with different projects, including Raheel (2014), Windows to the East (2016), The Song We Still Remember (2019), The Second Time (2022), and Breezes From Here and There (2022). His music has won critical acclaim and has been performed in various venues worldwide.

In recognition of his contributions to the cultural integration of Austria, Orwa and his ensemble RUH was honored with the Integration Prize of the City of Linz. Orwa’s music continues to inspire audiences worldwide and serves as a testament to the power of music to bring people together and bridge cultural divides.
